Liberia 2020 is a project whose aim is to build a school and self-sustaining environment for 850 unaccompanied minors in the town of Suakoko, Liberia. Liberia is recovering from years of devastating civil wars. Many Liberians spent years in refugee camps in neighbouring countries. In one such camp, Buduburam in Ghana, a school was built by a refugee named Karrus Hayes, with the support of an American sponsor, Cori Stern. Now that the war is over and repatriation is underway, a home for the returning students is needed.
The aims of the project are:
- to design and build a boarding school for 850 unaccompanied minors in Suakoko, Liberia
- to be a centre of excellence for girls' education in Liberia
- to develop strong ties with sister schools internationally
- to establish a farm to both provide food and to support the school commercially
- to develop village level industry so that the school is self sustaining
- to integrate with the local community, Suakoko, and provide adult education classes
- to create and refine project templates and processes, which can be re-used in other reconstruction projects within Liberia
- to build a project knowledge base, and make it available to interested groups and NGO's
2020 is a reminder that although the school has immediate and urgent needs, this is a long term project to benefit a new generation.
